'Introspection', a portrait painting

Collage fashion illustration

‘Introspection’ embodies  my preoccupation with reconciling divergent art approaches.

I went through a phase during my graduation year at university where I only painted in black and white, and focusing my attention on the balance between figurative work and abstract elements. I love working with the materials, the excitement of randomness and happy mistakes and a desire for fine detail co-existing with a reinforcement of the flat picture plane. But how do I take these very formal considerations and retain a statement about life, feeling and the human connection? I want these two opposing elements to co-exist, as a function of my personality and how I feel about the human condition. I want my thoughts made visual. I don’t know the answer in every piece, but I am searching and today I was satisfied I found a way that spoke to me.
